Wapiti Meadows Ranch Biface Cache

Wapiti Meadows Ranch Biface Cache
Yellow Pine, Valley County

  • Grant: 1994

Location: Wapiti Meadow Ranch Biface Cache, along Johnson Creek near Yellow Pine.

In June of 1994 a significant prehistoric site was identified along Johnson Creek near Yellow Pine. Forest Service archaeologists discovered a biface cache eroding out of an irrigations ditch. The cache consists of four obsidian and eleven chert bifaces. The site dates back 6000 years and is distinguished by an impressive stone tool assemblage that includes turkey-tail points, biface caches, and large side-notched points. It appears that the site was a staging area for seasonal use of upland resources such as camas, fish and game. The Trust helped to document the find, which remains in private ownership.
