The Eagles Club #486, Coeur d’Alene

The Eagles Club #486, Coeur d’Alene

Coeur d’Alene, Kootenai County

  • Grants: 2025 – Replace/repair windows and wood dance floor in ballroom

Location: Lot E 10′ 8, 9 Block L of Coeur D Alene & Kings Addition

What is now the Eagles Club #486 was built in 1920 and was home to several different businesses in its early years, including a general mercantile and hardware store. The Coeur d’Alene Eagles were established in 1903 (a mere 5 years after the Fraternal Order was created), and the leased space on the second floor of the building for several years before raising the necessary funds to purchase it out-right in the late 1940s.

In 1948, the Aerie (the chapter of Eagles) made extensive renovations, including an addition to north side, a new commercial kitchen in the basement, updated facade, remodel of the social room, and the creation of the ballroom. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, a debate raged among Aerie members whether or not they should stay in the Sherman building or purchase a plot of land and build anew. In 2006, they voted to stay and soon embarked upon a second major series of restoration/construction projects. They moved the bar from the back of the building to the front and opened the front facade to the street, creating a strong connection to public and a patio along the sidewalk edge that members could enjoy during the summer months. The remodel included new bathrooms, an addition of an elevator, new sprinkler system on the main floor, and upgrades to the water service to the building.

Unfortunately, time has not been kind to the windows of this beloved building. The glass is broken in some places, as well as damage to the sashes and sills. IHT’s 2025 Heritage Grant will help fund the replacement of the windows and restoration to their encasements.

Eagles Club #486 is one of the five largest Aeries in the world and has seen a steady increase in membership since the early 2000s. Learn more about their philanthropic endeavors and community involvement here: https://eagles486.com/
