In 1911 the U.S. Forest Service set aside Priest River Experimental Forest as a research area representing the Northern Rocky Mountains. It encompasses 6400 acres with elevations ranging from 2200 feet at the Wild and Scenic Priest River on the west to 5900 feet at Gisborne Mountain on the southeast corner. Many of the original buildings are still being used for forest research. Rustic buildings on the stations include an office-laboratory, three cottages, a wagon/storage shed, a bunkhouse, lecture-all and fire lookout. These structures were built with native materials and early frontier construction techniques to blend with the local landscape. They represent a uniquely American architectural style.
