From before recorded history, Native Americans used the unique carbonated springs in Caribou County as a camping and gathering site. It was known to the earliest European explorers and trappers. “Beer Springs” was one of the most significant stopping points along the Oregon Trail, due to its unique waters and landforms. Octagon Spring was named for its unique pavilion cover, made with eight sides. Based on the square nails and rough sawn sheathing, it is estimated that it predates 1900. According to the locals, the water tastes as fresh and effervescent as it always has.
