This building was built in 1937 as a part of the Work Progress Administration (WPA) to house the State of Idaho Department of Public Assistance. The building was built in the 1930s art deco style. The building has housed the Nez Perce County Historical Society since 1974.

The Historical Society, founded in 1960 just prior to Lewiston’s centennial year, is first and foremost a museum and the repository of the historical items of the county. It first opened a museum in what is now the Heritage House at 0310 Third Street on March 3, 1963. They moved just a decade later to their new address. In addition to preserving artifacts, the Society maintains a research library of local history. An extensive photo collection consists of early day citizens and historic scenes.
