Silver City, Owyhee County

  • Grant: 2012

Location: Washington Street, Silver City, ID

The current IOOF building was built in the 1870’s as an apartment house. In 1880, Dave Adams purchased the building and continued to rent the apartments. It was known as the Adams Building. For a short time, at the turn of the century, it was the location of the telephone office. In 1905, the I.O.O.F. and the Knights of Pythias purchased the building. They remodeled the building to accommodate the lodge and social rooms. Today it is owned by the Silver City Property Owners and the Odd Fellows continue to hold bi-annual meetings at this lodge.

The building is an example of vertical board wall construction (a board and batten wall without studs). The remaining primary windows and doors are from the 1870’s. The siding appears to have been installed during the 1905 remodel by the IOOF. The siding was known as “novelty siding” and its style is called “Channel Rustic.
