The Latter-Day Saints settled in the Elba Valley in the 1870’s. In 1887, a chapter of the LDS Relief Society, one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the world. The Relief Society was founded in Illinois in the early 1840s and now boasts more than seven million members worldwide, and they are primarily concerned with philanthropic and educational topics.

The Elba Relief Society formed in November of 1887 and received a donation of land from John Darrington in 1895. Over the ensuing years, Society members raised funds to construct their hall by selling eggs, butter, cheese, and various crafts, and the handsome brick building we see today was completed in 1902. The building is now owned and used as a community center that hosts all manner of public events and meetings.
