The Boise Basin Mercantile building in Placerville was one of three such stores built in the 1860s, making it one of if not the first chain stores in Idaho. The building housed a general store in the front, and the back portion was split into two levels: an apartment building above and a jail cell below. The jail was eventually boarded over and used as a storeroom; however, efforts are underway to restore the jail to its original condition. The building is now a museum run by the Placerville Historical Society and is open to the public from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day or by special request.
