Wallace, Shoshone County

  • Grants: 2024 – Restoration and Rehabilitation of the cast stone cornice at the Juliet Balcony above the Cedar Street double door entry

Location: 419 Cedar Street, Wallace, ID 83873

Built in 1924 and dedicated on June 6, 1925, the handsome two-story neo-classical building has been home to the Wallace chapter of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks ever since. The building is rectangular, constructed of brick and cast stone veneer over an underlying steel structure. The neo-classical style is typified throughout the exterior, with cast stone fluted piers on either side of the entry, that support an entablature and cornice with cast iron railings above. Cast stone is also used on the windowsills and elements of the decorative cornices that adorn the top of the building. Above the entry is a cast iron balustrade that encloses a small ‘Juliet Balcony’, which is inaccessible from the interior, but is still an indelible part of the character of this handsome structure.

The building is ideally located in the heart of Wallace’s business and social district. It has a large meeting hall and a smaller event space, as well as a full commercial kitchen, all of which are available for rent for both members and non-members alike. The Elks also host a number of public events throughout the year, including community and holiday dinners.

For those unfamiliar with the organization, the mission of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America is to serve the communities and people through benevolent programs. The Elks’ mission statement includes: promoting welfare, encouraging patriotism, cultivating fellowship, perpetuating the organization, inculcating virtues, recognizing belief in God, demonstrating the motto ‘Elks Care and Elks Share’. Elks spend millions of dollars annually supporting programs that encourage educational, patriotism, and benevolence, including scholarships, scouting, athletic teams, and work with veterans, among many other disciplines.
