1920 Oddfellows Home for the Aged, Caldwell

Caldwell, Canyon County

  • Grants: 2019 – Completely repainted exterior

Location: 720 N. 16th Avenue, Caldwell

A quintessential example of Second Renaissance Revival architecture, the Caldwell Oddfellow Home for the Aged was built in 1920 by the fraternal organization to provide housing to the elderly and infirmed. Designed by architects Tourtelotte and Hummell, it is deemed ‘the best local example of Second Renaissance Revival Institutional style,’ due to its combination of smooth surfaces and intricate, precise details.

Though no longer operated by the Oddfellows, the building is still used to provide important social services and housing to those in the most need, which is in keeping with the philanthropic intent of its original owners. Rechristened Hope’s Door, the building is now owned by Advocates Against Family Violence and provides a refuge and resources for victims of domestic violence. If you would like a peek inside, AAFV holds weekly lunches and other events to raise money for their organization.
