Sandpoint, Bonner County

  • Grant: 2019–Repair and repaint roofing and trim

Location: 417 North 4thAve., Sandpoint

Erected in 1906, First Presbyterian Church is downtown Sandpoint’s oldest church building still serving the community in this capacity. The lovely structure is built in the vernacular Gothic Revivalist style, with a steep gabled roof atop handsome brick work and each of the original, intricate stained-glass windows. The windows were purchased for the tidy sum of $6,000, which caused some friction between the pastor and church elders. The pastor insisted, thankfully, as the windows are still intact and an impressive sight to this very day.

In addition to church services and congregation gatherings, the space is open to the public and provides vital services to the Sandpoint community, including hosting music recitals and concerts, as well as AA and Al-Anon meetings. The outdoor Peace Garden has public tables, benches, a free lending library, and gazebo, and is a wonderful place rest and relax during the warmer months.
