Clock Cigar Shop

Clock Cigar Shop
Mackay, Custer County

  • Grant: 2018, 2020 – refabrication of eponymous clock

Location: 207 So. Main Street., Mackay, ID 83251

The Clock Cigar Store building was erected in 1901 as one of the first buildings in Mackay and served as home to the printing presses for two local newspapers until 1919. It was then remodeled into a jewelry store and watch repair shop, and the owner installed a large clock on the sidewalk. The space would go on to be used as a speakeasy and cardroom during prohibition and would later house a law office, sport shop, and art gallery. The clock fell and broke in the 1940s and was most likely destroyed, but the name has persisted ever since. The building has been vacant since the 1970s, but that is slated to change in 2021 for the town of Mackay’s 120th birthday celebration. The building was saved from demolition by the South Custer Historical Society in 2018 with the intent of restoring it for use as a museum.

The project is being overseen by the South Custer County Historical Society. For more information please reach out to scchs@atcnet.net
