The Empire Electric Railway Station was built in 1904 to house the electric batteries, which provided back-up power for the electric trains that traveled between Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. These trains carried both passengers and freight, but they are most remembered for shepherding tourists to and from the popular steamboat rides on Lake Coeur d’Alene. The structure is the last remaining building of the Spokane and Inland Empire Railway.

It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

About the Human Rights Education Institute (HREI):

The Human Rights Education Institute (HREI) mission is to celebrate diversity and human rights by educating, raising awareness, and recognizing the value of all humanity. We are recognized as a center providing cultural education, raising awareness about critical human rights issues while honoring differences and working toward common goals. We do this by using unique, often Smithsonian-level exhibits, informative presentations and speaking opportunities, and by offering dynamic youth and community programs that teach acceptance, character building and respect. Our Service area spans the panhandle region of North Idaho, Eastern Washington and Western Montana. Our organization was established in December of 1998.
