Emmett, Gem County

  • Grants: 2024 – Repointing brickwork

Location: 109 W Main Street, Emmett, ID 83617

Built in 1914, the Burkhard-Stewart Building is located at the main intersection of downtown historic Emmett, Idaho. Long a central fixture of Emmett’s bustling downtown, the building maintains many of the original structural qualities: hardwood flooring, metal ceiling tiles, and exterior brickwork with painted “ghost ads” for Coca-Cola and Owyhee Candy Company. The building has housed a multitude of small businesses throughout the decades, starting with Emmett Meat Market. It is now the home to a very popular deli/restaurant, a private residence, and executive office suites. It also has a full basement that is currently used for ceramic supplies for an art studio operated next door.

Disaster struck in June of 2003, when the building next door was lost to a fire and was completely destroyed. Thankfully, the Burkhard -Stewart survived, and the space where the other building used to stand is now a private park that hosts many events throughout the year. The building is also an integral part of community activities such as Christmas parade, Harvest festival, Cherry Fest parade, and Homecoming parade.

Current restoration work consists of mitigating water damage on the East wall, likely caused by irrigation of the park next door. This work will not only maintain the structural integrity of the building but will also allow for the preservation of much of the original brickwork.
